Sapphire, as a high-performance optical and structural material, has a wide range of applications in science, industry, and defense. In modern engineering, sapphire crystals are commonly used in plate, rod, tube, or complex shapes. However, during the machining of sapphire to achieve the desired geometry, not only is there significant loss of expensive raw materials, but the process is also extremely time-consuming, since sapphire can only be machined using diamond tools at very low speeds.

The emergence of the Edge-Defined Film-Fed Growth (EFG) technique has fundamentally changed this situation. After more than 50 years of development and refinement, the EFG method now enables the direct growth of sapphire crystals with specific shapes and dimensions, greatly reducing or even eliminating the need for additional machining. Furthermore, EFG offers several major advantages, including high crystal growth rate, the ability to grow multiple crystals simultaneously, and high production efficiency.

The Introduction and Advantages of EFG Method Sapphire:

The growth principle of the EFG (Edge-Defined Film-Fed Growth) crystal is as follows: Through the capillary action of small pores or slits within the die (mold), the molten material in the crucible is drawn upward to the upper surface of the die, which is wettable by the melt. On the top surface of the die, crystal growth is initiated and guided by a seed crystal in a controlled orientation. The cross-sectional shape of the grown crystal is determined by the shape of the die's upper surface.

Sapphire possesses unique physical and chemical properties--such as a high melting point, high hardness, broad optical transmission range, radiation resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance--which make it widely used in various engineering and technological fields. However, due to its extreme hardness, sapphire is difficult to machine into desired shapes and dimensions, and it is also challenging to grow large-sized sapphire crystals.
